In June of 2002, I accepted a position at a local startup software company called Logical Images. This 9-person company needed someone to manage a project with the Department of Health & Human Services to build a web site that would educate healthcare workers on the normal and adverse reactions of the smallpox vaccine.
It would turn out to be a great place to work. Founded by two physicians, it was inspired by Dr. Art Papier who had the vision to combine medical images, diseases, signs, and symptoms in a software application that would help the user build a differential diagnosis. VisualDx was the flagship product of the company and would be my main concern as I flew through the roles of webmaster, network administrator, project manager, technical support director, client services director, and product management director.
Over the years, the company saw ups and downs typical of a startup trying to find its niche and keep the cash flowing. There were a few different Presidents. There were a few different company missions. But this year, in the face of a down economy, and a leader that charged into 2009 set on making the company grow, the cash dwindled, sales dipped, expenses went up, and a downsizing was applied as a Band-Aid.
So, after nearly eight years, here I sit. Unemployed for the first time in 30 years. Getting laid off is kind of like going through the stages of grief - disbelief, anger, depression, and finally acceptance. I'm somewhere between anger and acceptance.
But, a new path is at my feet. It's time to explore. I have a compass. Act as if...and it shall be.
